Management Careers @ YellaReddy Guda!

Market Analysis
The candidate should be capable of doing a thorough analysis of Vegetables/Food items in the market. He should be ready to travel to the shop by foot. He should be extremely smart enough to sort out rotten vegetables from fresh ones. The mindset to apply right techniques to sort right vegetables will be very handy [Like snapping the tail of the lady’s finger to see if there is a ‘tuck’ sound! But should not squeeze the tomato to see if it is good!]. The application of new techniques is encouraged and if necessary we will sponsor the patenting process.

Managing Supplier/Vendor Relationships
He should have good negotiation skills to procure the vegetables at rock-bottom price and should definitely ensure the freebies at large quantities(green leaves and chillies). Performance-based bonus is dependant on the amount of freebies obtained. He should be aware of the fact that MRP means Minimum-possible Retail Price in the case of vegetables. He should talk with Supplier to get inventory delivered at our destination/doorstep. Fluency in Telugu/Hindi is preferred to managed good relationships. Should effectively handle Cash Transactions with Vegetable owners and should buy food in credit from Foodworld/Departmental store. Accounts Payable is ok, but Accounts receivable is absolutely unacceptable. To avoid lock-in effect, relationship should be maintained with multiple suppliers and we should let them play off with each other. Supplier competition is healthy to consumer! That is our motto.

Managing Inventory
The purchased vegetables/food items should be carefully sorted out and stored in the Refrigerator at designated places. The existing inventory should be carefully studied to dispose off any outdated/rotten food items. Once the inventory level falls below the EOQ, the efforts should be initiated to fill the void. The inventory should be periodically monitored to avoid the growth of any fungus.

Decision-Making
He should be able to carefully assess the home conditions (like whether people are motivated to work, to eat, etc.,) and make appropriate decisions. The ability to make decisions (what dish to cook) under constrained choices of inventory is expected. He should be a strong leader to motivate others work. If nothing works out, he should lead the people to best possible locations to eat.

Shop-Floor Management
The shop-floor management will be addressed as “cutting-board management” in our place. He should be able to handle tools efficiently. The inventory should be processed in a very productive manner. The requirements should be carefully gathered about what vegetables to cut and what shapes to transform to.

Managing Transformations
This is by far the most important and crucial role. Whoever handles this should be able to manage the transformation of raw rice to boiled rice, vegetables and spices and masalas to Sambar/Rasam/curry. Experience in popping the mustards and dried red chillies is good. He should also handle the intense heat of closed-and-smoky environment, the nasty sound of whistles. The talent lies is avoiding the fingers from getting burnt. Should be able to improvise every time. The multi-tasking is extremely important.

Managing Crisis/Disaster Recovery
Managing crisis is out and away the most under-estimated job. The Clean-up of the mess is important for further operations/missions to continue. The candidate should be able to withstand the sight of vessel mountain. Should use the water very efficiently. Should carefully calculate the washing powder available and consume at an optimum level. The willingness to clean the sink off any vegetable-particles/rice is desirable. There is no better satisfaction than overseeing the entire mess being cleared up in front of your eyes. Guaranteed. The performance is judged based on the shine of the sink!

The jobs are generally rotated except for Decision-making and Transformation management. Once the person is well-equipped to handle the squeezes, he can take over the mantle.

PS: I managed the crisis today :)

I was wondering whether any “World Sudoku Championship” exists. After googling, realized that the first world championship in sudoku was organized at Lucca, Italy on March 10-11 2006. The winner was a 31 year old Czech Economist, a lady called Jana Tylova.

I explored the WSC website and downloaded the Official instruction booklet. The number of Sudoku variations in the tournament is quite amazing! In total they have 27 variations…Pips, 0-9, Classic, <>, Diagonal, Sum, Odd/Even, 147, Irregular, Toroidal, Multi, Extra-Regions, Outside, Consecutive, Frame, Star, Pandigital, Mini, Product, Digital, Irregular 6x6, Multi-mixed, Irregular 12x12, Mechanical, Combined, Cubic and Word Sudoku! Huh…understanding the rules itself will take time :)

BTW, The World Puzzle Championship will be held at Bulgaria this year from October 7-12. If you are interested, explore the website to know the details. I am going to try out the sample puzzles given at the website during the weekend for my own pleasure!

BTW, the title is Japanese version of the word “SUDOKU” (Suuji wa dokushin ni kagiru) Source: Wikipedia

And the Fifa 2006 champions are…Azurris!

30 days ago, I spelt out the teams that I thought would make into Semi-Finals. The teams were Brazil, Argentina, Italy and England. Today am glad the only country which made into the Semi-Finals from the list also lifted the world cup…:)

But man, what happened to Zidane? The man of his calibre, such class, on the finals of the world cup, with only 10 minutes away from the finish time can’t react in that manner. I am curious what Materazzi said. But whatever he said, Zidane, such a cool person he seems to be, should not have reacted like that. He just destroyed the hopes of millions of French fans…More than the person who missed out in the penalty shoot-out, I think France will remember Zidane as the person responsible for losing the world-cup. Sad end to such a glittering career…

Anyways, am happy for Azurris, for ITALY…and I just shared the celebration with a glass of Beer :)

Episodes from Parlour!

It is almost 2 months since I cut my hair. I have to attend my cousin sister’s marriage this weekend. So decided to trim my hair to look neat and not shabby…Who likes the guy with shabby, ratty hair anyway? and that too in the marriage…it is a SIN ;)

Since two of my flat mates went to a nearby Men’s Beauty Parlour for dressing their hair, I decided to check out the parlour myself too…I was just entering the parlour and the door automatically opened itself from inside…I thought somebody is coming out and so stood away from the path..After some time, a local guy with 20 days old beard and colgate palmolive smile came out and said..”Come in sir!”. Gosh…then it struck..”it’s the damn customer service”.

I entered inside the parlour. The shop is fully air-conditioned. Not many customers. There were just two gentlemen utilizing the services of the parlour. One was middle-aged. He was reading his newspaper and one person was grinding his heels with a finely crafted saw like tool…and another one was polishing his fingernails..The other customer was just having a shampoo bath…A hair-dresser came to me and asked..”Sir..what do you want?”. I said..”Just haircut…medium..but short on the side and the back”…He understood and started his work..I was observing myself in the mirror and realized how much hair I have lost over the years…hmm…i think the supply will last only for few more years…I sincerely wish that a shining bald-head becomes a fashion by then…Just when I woke back from my good old memories, he disturbed me and said..”Sir..it’s done”!..I checked and said..”Ok”..I thought, I will have a massage..”How much for massage?”..”60 Rupees sir”..After few more conversations decided to have the massage.

He said..”Sir..use navaratna oil..it is good.” As I did not have any preference, i said..”ok”. He then began his massaging operation. He used my head as Drums, Mirudangam, washing stone, and what not…But I closed my eyes and enjoyed my massage…I have tried to do the same techniques myself but somehow don’t get the same relief, when a seasoned masseur does it..He then proceeded to massage my neck, shoulders, back till lower back. I got that tickling feeling when he massaged my back. I started reacting just like a person who is being tickled does. The masseur started smiling and continued his massage in the same place… it tickled more…more…and then I leaned forward….forward and fell in to splits of laughter…Even the masseur started laughing…I felt weird and awkward!! I signalled him to stop…he understood and proceeded back towards the head region and finished his job. By now my hair was a holy mess…So, I asked him..”How much for shampoo?”..He said, “Rs.60/=”..”So, that includes drying also?”..”No sir, Rs.60 for drying…”…What a way to extract money…”Ikkada anni aravai rupaila?” (Everything is Rs.60 here?) ..Paid for the hair-cut and massage. I then had to walk back the distance to my home and had to bear the strange looks of people who were wondering what happened to my hair…:) But the massage left me energized for the whole day…

Pedal…Pedal…

Cycling…

Whenever I go to fitness centre (I have visited fitness centre only 30-40 times totally in my life), my legs take me automatically to the cycling equipment. I just love pedalling…After seeing lance armstrong and the way he beautifully pedals in a rocking motion, I have developed a liking to cycling…rather pedalling…

I normally set a target. Say 10 kms. Every time, I will try to beat my previous performance. The latest is 10 kms in 17.3 minutes at difficulty level 4. It’s always easy to reach 2-3 kilometers. It is the middle portion which is tough to sustain. You will feel like giving up…That’s when, my prestige takes over…”What the F#@*, be a man…”!!! Then, I pedal…pedal…look sideways…look up…look at my own image in the mirror…murmur to myself..”I can..I can..” After some time, I will stablize..Then, legs will begin to hurt… feel a sense of bulging on thighs…on the calf muscles…sweat pouring like heavens from your head…Finally, when I reach the target, automatically the smile emerges on the face…the victorious smile…! A sense of achievement…:) For that short duration of time, I am Lance Armstrong…no one can take that perception away from me…!

Only when I plant my foot on the ground will I realize that taking even a single step is going to be a herculean task…Not ready to show the tiredness, I just stylishly lean on to the nearby support (wall, equipment or some god damn thing!) as if I am posing to a photographer……and wait until I sense that I can walk normally…man, I am weak yet I am strong…it’s all in the mind…

But there are all kinds of people who come to fitness centre…6 feet vertically or 5 feet horizontally or 7 feet circumferentially! People with huge biceps roughly the size of my thighs! (Well that’s an exaggeration..Let me correct it…actually the biceps are bigger than my thighs!) Fat-burners…muscle-builders…People who lift all the weights in one stretch and people who lift just the bar…diversity at its best…

I always use to wonder, everyone wants to spend calories when they come to gym…basically give away the excess calories..why not convert those calories to something useful…say electricity! Say, you pedal…so connect the wheel to a generator through a conveyor belt and efficiently convert the energy to electricity…the more electricity i generate, the more I feel like Shah-rukh-khan of Swadesh! Same applies to all the equipments…Anyone interested in a good business plan? please feel free to implement it..no royalties please :)

Man, I am so happy today…because after 15 months…I spent the complete 8 hours in work only for work!!! so, just letting my fingers type whatever it wants…

Paradisoooo….

http://www.cinemaparadisoshop.com/images/index_11.jpg

At ISB, we have this benefit of renting top-quality DVDs anytime, the luxury of recommending a good DVD to be purchased. In the outside world, renting DVD is a costly affair. Even if you manage to rent a DVD for 50 rupees, there are chances that the DVD is pirated and that the DVD player might get damaged.

There is this shop called “Cinema Paradiso”, India’s first licenced DVD rental shop. They have few branches in India. This is a high-end rental shop and targeted towards the affluent society. The membership fees is Rs.3000 and the cost of renting a single DVD is Rs.75 or Rs.100 depending on the movie. That is costly in Indian standards. But the shop has an awesome collection of movies, some of which you might never get in a normal shop. This is a great benefit for movie aficionados. Moreover almost all the DVD’s are collector’s edition (which will have lot of features in addition to the movie). They have also neatly classified the movies to different genres. I believe, having a membership here will soon become a symbol of status!

The special feature of the shop is the mini theatre. This is what Hindu has to say about this

“..The 11-seater is equipped with a 52-inch plasma television. With the acoustics okayed by A.R. Rahman’s sound engineers, the theatre will give you the complete theatre experience tempered with a happy cosy feel thanks to snug rugs and comfy sofas. And while you could bring in eats from the many fast food joints in and around the place, popcorn is on the house. ..”

The cost of renting the mini theatre for 11 people is Rs.1000/=. Now, that’s a nice way to celebrate an occasion for a small group!

I will wait for some more time before getting a membership. May be my firm comes up with a corporate plan…

Tale of Online search…

1. Post my profile in TeluguMatrimony.com [With a very short-and-sweet description, no photos uploaded, no horoscopes uploaded]

2. Explain the Online matrimonial facility to my parents and the benefits associated with it. Impressed with such a facility available in net, they pursue me to add more details. I even ended up paying Rs.1750/= to acquire the paid-benefits of the matrimonial site [Like sending personalized message, password-protecting the photograph etc.,]. Can’t believe it!

3. Go through the profiles matching my preferences. The most important filtering being “Search profiles who has put up photographs”!! Later, I realized that most of the people who put up photographs have published a well-crafted, studio-quality photographs. The bright-white teeth, the angel-like glow behind the hair and extremely fair face (a closer analysis will reveal the huge contrast between the hand color and the face color!) makes you wonder “How come everyone is so beautiful”??

4. Wait for someone to contact me. You know, the typical Why-should-I-make-the-first-move thought. Fed up with the dismal response rate, I begin to analyze the reasons…

5. Decide to search for profiles without photographs. I learn to patiently read the description written by the parents/friends/siblings. It turns out that genuinely interested people do not publish the photographs (or atleast password-protect the photographs).

6. Decide to make the first move. Express the interest to the newly found profiles and wait for response.

7. Decide to publish my photograph and put up my salary figure. Within 24 hours, the response rate improves dramatically. Agency problems??

8. All the while, I forgot about the Horoscope compatibility. I cannot seek the service of a Purohit each time to match the horoscopes nor can I learn the astrology overnight. Think…Think…Finally, I find an online Horoscope matching service which does a good job of matching.

9. Match the horoscopes of profiles to decide whether to proceed further or not. The service gives a score on a 36 scale. Minimum of 18 points is needed for horoscope to be compatible. If the points is 30+, then the match is excellent! But the score is not just enough..There are more checks like Manglik dosha, Nadi dosha, Masala dosha, Paper dosha etc.,!!! If there is any one dosha, then even if you have a score of 36 out of 36, the horoscopes are certified as incompatible! [A small fact, 46%-53% of people in the world are Mangliks]. Manglik dosha is the result of Mars positioning himself/herself in some specific squares in horoscope. Now is this what is meant when someone say “Men are from Mars and Women are from Venus”…Juz Kidding ;)

10. It turns out that 5 out of 8 profiles that were up for matching are incompatible.

11. I get more responses [both response to my responses and fresh proposals]. The horoscope funneling eliminates the responses!

12. A close friend suggests to remove the salary figure and put the photograph (password-protected). Also, a few modifications in the description. I follow the same.

13. Two prospects have been contacting me since then. Also, they received a score of 33 out of 36 in horoscope compatibility test! One prospect asked me to meet the brother of the girl in hyderabad! Scared by the thought of being interviewed mercilessly by a stranger and by the speed at which events were taking place, I decided not to respond. I will let my parents do the initial talking.

14. One profile caught my attention, but for one thing. The HEIGHT! She was 170 cms. I remember my height as 169 cms. I wanted to confirm my height badly…I even bugged my flat mates to help me in measuring my height!! At that moment, I was complaining to god for being vertically challenged :) Anyway, I don’t want to end up as the shorter one after the marriage! So, with heavy heart had to let go that profile…and updated my preferences to reflect the height…

15. After few cycles, the preferences have evolved and many confusions are cleared. I have even come up with a bank of questions to ask whenever I get a chance to meet a prospect! There is also a document of “things that I would like to do for my life-partner” so that I can impress her in the future…you see, the problem of seeing too many Tam/Hindi love movies :)

16. Now comes the anti-climax. It turns out that my preferences have narrowed my choices way too much. Caste, Place, Education, Career, Height, Looks…etc.,

17. Totally confused and frustrated by the futility of the online search with such a preference, I finally decide to not log into matrimony site anymore. Atleast not for the next 1 month. As I was not lucky enough to find a life-partner on my own so far, I will leave the job to my parents…provided my preferences are satisfied. It’s going to be a long-drawn process…that’s for sure and it better take time, as it is a question of life…!

Only take-away: I got to meet/interact with 2-3 new people. It was great to know about their interests and ambitions in life.

For a brief period, there was a great interest to get married and settle in life fast..Now, the interest has died down (is gradually dying down..)…With the excitement and fun away, it’s time to kick-some-mighty-a** in work :) The momentum is finally picking up at work front…

PS: There was a big dilemma whether to publish this or not…Question of excitement vs consequence…finally, excitement prevailed…hope I am not wrong….

Welcome aboard!

It is hardly 45 days since I joined the firm and I am taking session in the induction program for freshers…Well, had to cover for a person who was supposed to take the session…

It’s very refreshing to see fresh graduates straight out of the college, with a great amount of enthusiasm and interest gleaming in their eyes. They don’t have any idea about how the organization works and how the teams function. But they want to do some geeky things. Develop great software. Make big bucks. Buy gadgets. Do lot of things….When they join the organization they are like babies. At this stage, their learning curve is very steep and they absorb concepts/ideas/techniques in large amounts. They are clean from organizational politics. I liked interacting with them…REFRESHING….

My colleague who accompanied me explained to the freshers about lot of fun things that happens in our BU. Overall, we projected our Business Unit as THE PLACE to work in the organization…That’s a big deal given the fact that we did not even had any PPT’s to present!

Another incentive for taking sessions for freshers is that you can check out some smart girls….and if you want, do a little bit of fun ragging as well :) (But we didn’t!). A funny incident. Since we were the 5th Business unit to present, we did not want the freshers to go through another round of boring introductions! But at the same time, the curious harmones in us wanted to know the name of some girls….So I began asking, “Is there a person in this room who knows every person by name?”. Not even a single hand raised! Luckily, a person from the last bench raised his hand. I said, “Give him a big hand, it’s a commendable thing.” After a brief applause and making sure that he felt happy about the achievement (no sarcasm here, it’s very tough to remember the names of many strangers at once), my colleague interrupted, “Wait, I don’t believe you..Tell me the name of the person here” (Pointing to the girl)!…The cycle continued until we knew what we wanted to know!

Fun apart, I proposed to my superior that myself and my two colleagues will be taking all the induction sessions in future (about our Business unit). With the rate of expansion that is happening, I guess there will be induction sessions every fortnight or even week! Nice exercise to spend the time….until we hit the 100% utilisation rate…

FANAA

What I liked: The songs, The child artist Akshay Bhagwat, Moments of brilliance and twist in the movie.

What I disliked: The loongggg story line. Everyone in the theatre became restless towards the end…and at that opportune time comes a sher-o-sheri, which apparently are overloaded throughout the movie!

Worth watching half-the-movie…Which half depends on your preference!

The punchline of the movie:
“In life one comes across situations where the answer to life cannot merely be decided by choosing right or wrong, good or simply bad. Sometimes a person has to make the choice of choosing between what is Greater of two goods or the lesser of two evils…”

“THE CANDID VOICE”

Saw the movies “Pink Panther” and “Poseidon” in the last couple of weekends. Pink Panther was quality fun and Steve Martin has done a splendid job. Poseidon, well, should have been renamed as “Upside down”! The whole concept was mentally challenging. How will it be if the environment around you is vertically inverted? The movie was non-stop action. But beyond a certain point, I started losing interest. Didn’t impress me much.

I am racing against time to complete the book “The Da Vinci Code”, so that I can watch the movie with the novel in my mind. I missed out the experience of watching a movie after reading the novel/book with “The Lord of the Rings” Trilogy. Anyway, I started reading the book on monday night and am half-way through. Man, I love the mystery presented and the way it unfolds. Add to the mystery some dark concepts, Controversial revelations and the elements of the genius Da Vinci, you have a perfect recipe for a great novel…

I want to watch the movie for the experience (Movie-after-novel), the beautiful actress Audrey Tautou :) and ofcourse the oscar-studded Tom Hanks. Of course, the movie will not have any suspense for me..but that’s fine.

Eagerly waiting for the weekend to arrive…

ps: btw, “THE CANDID VOICE” (the title of the post) is an anagram of “THE DA VINCI CODE” :)

One India..One India…BSNL One India…

Recently, a phenonmenon swept over chennai and many parts of Tamil Nadu. The “Vazha meenu, vilanga meenu” phenomenon. The song, the picturization, the singer and the choreography took “Gaana Ulaganathan” to the cloud nine in a short span of time. He was iconized with a single song. Now, he has started endorsing products and services! He is endorsing for “BSNL - one India scheme”. He has modified the same song with which he became popular for this ad. The song goes like this…

“Sada phonukkum cell phonukkum oru rooba…
Kashmirukkum kanyakumarikkum oru rooba….
One India…One India…BSNL One India….”

With the look-alike of malavika shaking her hips and hands rhythmically in the background…Even “Thalaivar Thimingalam” is featured :)

BSNL seems to know the pulse of people.

PS: People who haven’t seen the song and the ad cannot appreciate this post…

DKDC Framework!

An attempt at my own 2 x 2 matrix creation :) …Don’t read too much…

The X-axis represents the amount of interest you have for any topic.
The Y-axis represents the amount of knowledge you have about any topic.

You might come across any topic/person/activities in your life. You might either know about the subject already or not. You might either have interest for the subject or not.

This framework suggests you 3 ways for knowing and generating interest about any subject. So you basically start at the “Don’t know Don’t care” quadrant. You have to reach “Do know Do care” quadrant. As you can see, there are 3 ways to reach the destination.

1. Generate interest about the subject and simultaneously learn about that! [Travel diagonally]
e.g., You are forced to do a project in your work with a particular technology. You don’t know the technology and you don’t have interest for that either. As you work your way through the project, you get to know about the technology, and as you know, your interest grows parallely!

2. Learn about the subject and then generate interest for that subject! [Traverse Y-axis first, then X-axis]
e.g., You are going to a restaurant..You see all alien menu items! You are hungry. So, you should order something and try it out. If you like it then you will generate an interest for it!

3. Generate interest for the subject and then learn about the subject! [Traverse X-axis first and then Y-axis]
e.g, First impressions, Love at first sight, Infatuation etc., If your further learning about the subject reveals more unpleasant ’secrets’, then you will ‘permanently’ go back to “Do know Don’t Care” quadrant!

So, everyday in your life, keep exploring subjects that you “don’t know and don’t care”…and then consciously make effort to deposit the subject under your “do know do care” quadrant! Only very few subjects make it to that quadrant…and stay in that quadrant…Whatever remains in that quadrant, nurture those!

Dogs, Frogs and tremors…

Filed under: MBA, Fun, ISB, Diary

These 3 things have caught my attention in the recent past!

Till Sometime before, there were loads and loads of frogs jumping around in ISB. The quads in ground floor became the house of frogs sometimes, as they came in through the open windows…annoying! Lucky me, got the first floor…The frog-hating person in me vanished after exposure to numerous frogs..I even did a mini-research by placing my foot repeatedly near the frogs..and I found that frogs always invariably jumped away from me…So, human beings don’t have to walk away from frogs, because frogs does that job for us! But all of a sudden there is a decrease in frog population..wonder what happened to those poor little creatures??

Second, the tremors..Next to ISB, there is a rocky region, where rock explosions are conducted daily. Sometimes you hear a loud noise, sometimes less…But you could always feel the shock! The doors and the glass-windows vibrate…For some reason, the effect is magnified in the class rooms…On the other day, there was such a powerful shock that even the professor was aghast…He said, “Whoo…that was powerful”. I hope ISB has implemented earthquake protection measures while constructing ISB :) …we have been feeling these mild shocks on a day-to-day basis…

Third one is quite interesting. I never saw a dog in ISB campus till a month ago. And then comes a dog..quite street-side! For some reason it seems to like SV2 I block! After few days, another dog joins the old one. This one much bigger…You could see them chasing each other all day…For past 3-days these two dogs have been sleeping in the verandah before my quad. They keep staring at the opposite quad, where ladies live…Every now and then, one of them will come out and say “Shoo…Shoo!” and then it goes away..moments later, the dogs come back and sit in the same place and start staring…:) Was funny! Today, they were not around…

I was coming back from library around 2:30 a.m. I saw a third one, a new one! Roaming around freely in the beautiful lawns of ISB…Hmm, did ISB ‘recruit’ those dogs one for each student village? or they are just trespassers, waiting to be thrown out…

BTW, I managed to complete all of my assignments except one, the big daddy, Vulnerability analysis for Rural marketing course…Have been reading loads and loads of articles on Agriculture, Fertilizers, Organic farming etc., Interesting…but am not going to stretch it for long…

“My mind tells me to give up, but my heart won’t let me.”

The greatest pain in life is to wish for something and not to achieve or attain it. Even worse, you will have to live with it for the rest of your life. But there is certain warm feeling associated with ‘wishes’ in life. It can’t be expressed by words. But they certainly do motivate us, bring some purpose to our life and some entertainment to our otherwise tired souls and mind…The wishes, dreams bring in ‘life’ to our lives..I am trying to keep my dreams alive…Many of them are are still in incubation…One day or other they will be realized.

BTW, I have started enjoying the ‘exams’ setting. I am not sure if I will be ever taking examinations in my life again. So, I have decided to enjoy the experience of preparing for exams, slogging, taking exams as much as possible. With this mindset, studying for exams becomes a bliss…isn’t it…Whoever said “Change your mind you will change your life”…

Are you kidding?

Which year was Human Development Index conceptualized? What is the rank of Srilanka in Well-Being Index? How can Indian IT companies appropriate value? What did XXX said when he visited the campus during the panel at the nth minute and nth second?

These are not the kind of questions and examinations I like. But some well-known professors are reverting to test our memory skills…What to do? Only option is to get on with the flow…

Only exam which makes sense is Investment Analysis and I heard rumours that the paper is royally tough!!! Let me see what happens…

Actually finished the exam(2.5 hours) in 40 minutes, just checked back my answers and decided to leave..Atleast I can make use of the the remaining 1.5 hours by sleeping so that I can slog in the night!!!

Fly in the Urinal

Today’s MO class on “Innovation at Work” was rocking. Tina Dacin, the great professor from Queen’s conducted a small exercise in the class. She asked each study group to come up with a creative ways of improving the Neck-Tie. So all groups went crazy and came with all weird ideas. Some of the ideas can be found below:

1. Electronic Tie with inbuilt Bluetooth capability. This will facilitate Tie-to-Tie Communication!

2. Bio-Sensor Tie which will monitor the heart beat and automatically send signals to doctor wirelessly in case something goes wrong!

3. Making markings on the tie to facilitate adjustment of tie length

4. Bio-Tie and Easy-Tie with anti-stink features. Automatically fills aroma around you in case some girl comes near you!

5. MP3 capability in Tie with headphones and inbuilt microphone to help you in presentations!

6. Spare cloth in Tie to shine your shoes!

7. RFID-based tie. A sort of inbuilt smart-card. Identification facility will be inbuilt. So you just have to swipe your tie!

8. Cool-tie. Coolant around the neck of the Tie!

9. Lie-detector in the Tie!

10. Self-protection Tie for girls! Which will throw itchy powder if anyone troubles the girl!

11. New fabric in the Tie, which helps the Tie owner to adjust the length of the tie, after the tie has been knot!

12. Marketing-gimmick ties. Tie which can be twisted to any shape(according to the product eg. Coke bottle shape!)

13. Retractable tie, which can be shaped to bow-tie.

14. Holographic Imprint of tie on the shirts. No Tie. But Tie-manufacturer wouldn’t accept this solution naturally! so discarded.

15. Tie with hidden pocket to store your money…

and many more crazy ideas…It was a funny session. At the end of the session, she showed us a video on IDEO company and how it manages innovation in the company…Am really impressed with that company, rather that job!

Finally she showed us the following picture(without any words on it) and asked us to find what’s unique in the picture. Then she said the actual ‘funda’ behind this. Innovation at Schipol airport! Weird world….:)

Yesterday went for Nagesh Kukunoor’s movie “Iqbal”. Inspirational movie. It’s about a village boy, dumb and deaf, making as a bowler into Indian team. The story spins around his life, the obstacles he faces and his determination. As I went without any expectations, the movie was a pleasant surprise for me. Two songs in the film are also very good. “Aashaayen…” and “Khelenge Khelenge”…Have downloaded the songs and listening…Kapil Dev has made a guest appearance too! As Indianblogger is leaving hyderabad and heading towards his hometown Bhubaneshwar, we had a get-together. All the best B…

Well, back to ISB. Two professors are done with their sessions and two new professors have joined the bandwagon. Both of them are very good. Considering the kind of vague subjects they are teaching, they are doing excellent job. Tina Dacin, from Queen’s University, Canada, is lively person. She knows how to carry the class…

As I write, it’s exactly 1 hour left for count down timer to cross the 200 days mark!

Intellectual Winetasting…

We had a guest speaker for “Planning an Entrepreneurial Venture” course. Mr. Manish Sabherwal, CMD of Team Lease Services Pvt Ltd, India’s largest temporary staffing company. Manish started his professional career in 1990 with the Nagarjuna Group. Went to Wharton to do his MBA in 1994 and had a clear cut vision to make an entrepreneurial entry into the insurance sector in India. In 1996 India Life was born. From pension/ asset management it went into provident fund administration to payroll administration to offering full-scale HR outsourcing services. In between, it had raised VC funding from VIEW Group. Got into a JV with Hewitt (to form India LIfe-Hewitt) in 2000 and later, Hewitt bought out 100% equity. Manish is now in the process of stabilizing and growing Team Lease to be the largest private sector employer in the country!!!!!!

Some Excerpts from his speech…Read on…Will be interesting.

MBA is like Intellectual Winetasting.

When you optimize something, starting values are always sub-optimal.

Entrepreneurship is not like the light bulb glowing on, it’s like a gentle sunrise!

Quality and Quantity of ‘wandering’ in your initial stages of entrepreneurship, forms the essense of ideation process.

Post-mortems have certainity than prescription!

The biggest danger is not aiming high and missing, but aiming low and staying there!

If you win the rat race, you are still a rat! There is no differentiating factor. What do you have special? What is your unfair advantage? That is the essence of ideation.

The Key skill in Entrepreneurship is Synthesis. Not analysis. By Synthesising, you see ten different things and come up with one solution.

God is not on the side of the biggest army but on the side of big shots. But If she is on the other side, you should pause and think! - Play your game carefully but boldly.

Don’t sell the land, sell just the house - Raise only enough money that you need, don’t give away considerable stake in your venture.

Success is 99% perspiration and 1% inspiration..I think that fits to Agricultural society. This is age of knowledge, innovation.

Read Diverse materials. Read biographies, history, politics, mythology, psychology, leadership, strategic alliance…Involve in Diverse activities. Want to learn how to control someone who is stronger and bigger than you? Learn horseriding. Want to learn the value of persistence? Learn how to play with flute. Travel. Learn how to see world differently.

Network with Diverse people and connection. Don’t hangout with people from ISB :-) Hangout with Musicians, poets, government people…Completely diverse…

Indian mind has the problem with sunk cost. Our memories are more than dreams. Sunk is gone! Don’t worry about it more. We have conflicting attitude between the wealth and those who possess it.

Export quality - What the hell does that mean? Does white people deserve better than us?

Someone said, “Secret to success is being in the right place at the right time”. Since we don’t know the right time, we find the right place and hangout!!

Family Enterpreneurs are many in India. They expect their children to come and take over the mantle. That led to the Sexually transmitted CEOs!! I am not arguing against that..but these are some of the causes of self-destruction.

Family Entrepreneurs and MNCs are both ends of extreme. Strike a balance. Don’t go native. Don’t go firangi. You must pass this smell test of global company while still keeping your Indian cost structure. That’s the sweet spot that you guys should target. So the best bet is the hybrid. You should be bisexual, you double your chances of finding your date!

You can start two kind of companies. “Baby” vs “Dwarf”. Both of them are small but the DNA of the baby is clean and scalable.

Napolean said, No Battle plan ever lives at the start of the battle. Yet People plan battles till the last detail. That’s a little bit of what I have learnt in Business plan.

Anything worthwhile in life takes time. Develop patience.

Don’t worry about competitors who pull rabbits out of the hat. You should know that supply of rabbits is limited!

Doesn’t matter you jump from the 50th floor or 100th floor, pain is still the same. 10 cr or 100 cr doesn’t make difference.

I have never met any unhapppy successful entrepreneurs. But I have met many unhappy successful Executives.

Anybody can by lucky or unlucky - But being unprepared is unforgiveable. Be ready for what you want to do.

Remember good judgement comes from experience. But experience comes from bad judgement.

There’s huge difference between what we teach and what you need to learn. Because we don’t know how to teach what you need to learn. What we teach is finance, strategy, marketing, accounting..But what you need to learn is how to be more patient, how to be more bold, how to be more courageous, how to be more kind, how to be more just…

Hardest part, as Aristotle said, is “Beginning of the work”. In the context of this course, it is committing to the Entrepreneurial cause. It is not deciding on one venture. It is committing to the Entrepreneurial mindset. You must nurture that mindset. You must keep it alive.

My confidence is in your hearts and your imaginations. May your soft heart working on hard minds make a thoughtful choices. Good luck and Godspeed!
(Standing ovation)…

From what I see the great speakers are who make our hearts light while enlightening the spirit and flooding the mind with thoughts. Insights blended with correct amount of humour, sarcasm, self-depracation and humility goes a long way….Captain Raghuraman, Sid Sinha, Ajit Rangnekar also fall under this category.

I not only multiplied my interest towards Entrepreneurship, but also magnified my interest to be a great presenter. But that’s not a day’s job or a year’s job…It will be a long-drawn process…

Just noticed that Gmail has offered 2 GB of storage space to many users. Interesting thing is the storage limit is increasing like a super-fast ticker in the login-page of Gmail. It’s like interest accumulating on a Fixed deposit. Cool! I have 2087 MB of storage space…I guess I will never have to worry about storage space ;-)

Funny tools

I stumbled upon this funny link today. The person has made some research tools using Google API. Some of the tools are worth trying. For example “PageBoost” displays a computer generated “Review” for your website based on the contents, links, colour scheme etc., Here’s the review for my blog :-D

“…I just saw . Five-star. Don’t get me wrong, I expected the creator to work within these quality standards. If only my aunt would have a splendid page like that. What a high-quality page! It must have taken months to design the page. Seeing Way2Top , I’m simply out of words.
There are 67,700 characters in the source for this page, which is a great length for Chinese users. The URL has 27 characters. This length scores best in usability studies. Very, very good. The color scheme is impressive. The page contains 175 links, a stable amount.
(…)
The document is highly accessible. If God would create web pages, this is what they would look like.”

Gigapixel Camera!

“…Weighing more than 100 pounds, Flint’s camera captures images at 4 gigapixels — a resolution high enough to photograph four football fields and capture every single blade of grass. When printed at maximum resolution, the images are as big as billboards, but render the finest detail….

A photograph of a San Diego beach shows a paraglider swooping over bluffs. Zoom in on some tiny dots on the cliff, and a group of people with binoculars and telephoto lenses can be seen…”

The biggest prints could theoretically measure up to 48 feet long and 24 feet high — all from a single shot. But for practical reasons, Flint’s biggest print to date was 21 feet long. “Most places don’t have enough wall space to hang them,” Flint said. “It’s as high as you can get. The only way to get higher is to stitch multiple images together….” [Wired]

Take a look at the gallery yourself to see how much detail is being talked about. We are seeing 6MP, 10 MP digital cameras in the market. And we see here 4 Giga pixel camera!! That’s 400 times more resolution than consumer digital cameras!

Apprentice 3

Apprentice 3 has begun. 3 Episodes are already over. This season has been tagged as “Street smarts Vs Book smarts”. Somehow most of the people get a feeling that Street smarts are real smarts. Well, I’ll tell you, Street-smart being a book-smart is the deadliest combination.

Some of the candidates that I think will make it to to final 4 are [in order of preference]. Let’s see how my Judgement is. Ofcourse, If I see two more episodes, I can say even more authoritatively..but anyway..

John
Craig
Kendra
Audrey

Many candidates who were impressive on their biography have disappointed. Most notably, Brian. Man, he is such a abrasive person that he blew himself out.

As usual, “lessons learned” are archived in NBC website.

1. Training is Key: Broad-based and Job-specific
2. Communicating in Stressful Situations.
3. Dealing with Negative Team Members.
4. The Creative Brief: The first step in Marketing

BTW, from the fourth season Donald Trump will not be starring. The fourth season will have “Martha Stewart”, another person living the “American Dream” [Read rich lifestyle]. It’s interesting to note that Martha stewart was sentenced for 5 months in September 2004 for her fraud in stock trades!

UPDATE: Looks like there will be two versions of Apprentice from next year. “Apprentice 4″ starring Donald Trump and “Apprentice : Martha stewart” starring Martha stewart. Interesting!

Solving Hindu Crosswords in PC!

I have started working out Hindu Crosswords for past 3 weeks. I can honestly say, it is very effective and educative hobby. You get to enhance your English vocabulary, learn new facts, places, personalities etc., Solving Hindu Crossword is two part. First you have to straighten the cryptic clue. Once you have the clue, you have to apply the clue and arrive at the final answer. Right now, I am able to get only 5 or 6 answers right. It’s not easy to solve the entire crossword..One of my friend’s dad has been solving Crossword for 20 years and even he finds it difficult to complete the crossword! If you manage to complete the crossword you can pat yourself on the back as you are one among the very few crossword experts…

I was wondering if it is possible to try out those Hindu Crosswords in PC. I looked around and found that it’s possible. But it will take 2-3 minutes of your time daily to make it PC compatible. I like to fill, erase and try out different combinations. With PC it becomes much more easier.

1. Download and Install Across Lite in your PC. It’s free.
2. Join the “thehinduxword” yahoogroups. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/thehinduxword/
3. Go to their File section and download a file “WhyMyOwn_BK.zip” with a description “Why I make my own X-word”.
4. Follow the instructions in the file and you will be fine.

Attempt at story writing!

Result of some free time today!! Comments on my story will be greatly appreciated

“It was a beautiful evening, with sun still shining, waiting to turn orange before being taken over by night. There  was a small pond in the middle, surrounded by dense colourful trees, still spellbound by Autumn. The entire place was filled with pleasing silence. The sounds of bird chirpping, fishes splashing in to the water, sound of leaves excited by the gentle breeze were the only things that challenged the silence.

On the bank of that tiny pond, An old man was sitting with his fishing rod pointing towards the pond. His age must be nearing 80. He was wearing a white english hat with a grey shirt and black pant. He had a thick white beard, well trimmed. One could easily see the smoke coming out of his archaic pipe. He had couple of books around him. One on philosophy and the other on Management. Perhaps he is an author or may be Professor. There was a basket to hold trapped fishes and it was filled with ice to keep the fishes fresh. Two fishes had it’s last breath just moments ago on the basket.

“Grandpa!”, a sharp voice broke the silence. A boy of around 6 years came running towards the old man. One could find it hard to differentiate between a doll and the boy. He was well dressed with a rich looking T-shirt and short pant. The old man kept the fishing rod gently beside him and stood up. He hugged the boy, lifted him and softly kissed him on his rosy cheeks. The little boy and the old man have an enviable eternal relationship. The little boy will not sleep without hearing a story from the Grandfather. The Grandfather’s day will be not over without seeing the boy and his priceless candid smile.

“How was the school, son?”, asked Oldman. “Excellent”, replied the boy. “Grandpa, what’s the story today? I am eager to hear”. “My dear little boy, I have a wonderful story for you. But today, after telling the story, I will not tell the moral of the story, but you should tell it. Let’s see how intelligent you are becoming.”, said Grandpa. “Yes”, boy whispered with his eyes big open.

“Once upon a time,” continued the Grandpa, “There was an old man living in a village, with his three sons. He was a wealthy man and well respected in the village. But due to his age and recent sickness, he was lying in the bed. The doctor just visited him and said that his days are being counted. The old man was expecting this to happen. But with amazing calmness, he asked his three sons to come near him. His three sons have been quarelling and fighting among themselves for quite some time. The old man was very much worried about the lack of bondage between the brothers. So in order to teach them the lesson, he gave them a simple task. There was a bundle of sticks lying in the corner of the room, held together with a strong rope. He asked the eldest son to take the bundle. He asked him to break the bundle with all his might.”

The boy didn’t blink. He was listening with absolute concentration. Grandpa continued, “The Eldest son tried with all his effort and couldn’t break it. So he asked his second son to do the same task. The same result again. Even the second son couldn’t break the bundle. With a small smile, he asked his last son to do the same task. The youngest lad with his youth and energy tried and failed. With a calm tone, the old man asked his sons to untie the bundle. He requested each of his sons to take the sticks and break it. The sticks broke with little effort. By this time, the sons started realizing what their father is up to.”, stopped the Grandpa.

Looking at the little boy in his eyes with a caring warmth, Grandpa said “Son, now tell me what did you learn from the story?”. Grandpa was expecting that the boy would say “Unity is strength”. The little boy thought for a while and started speaking “Grandpa, When the sticks were bundled together, it was impossible to break it. When the bundle was untied it lost its strength”. Grandpa was happy that the boy is going in the right direction and was listening. “So Grandpa, when the problem is difficult to solve, one should break it to smaller parts. The the problem can be solved easily”. Not expecting such a totally different perspective, Grandpa was stunned. He didn’t speak or move for a minute.
To be continued…”

250MB for my Hotmail!!

I was surprised and happy to see 250MB of storage space in one of my hotmail Ids(Yes, I have 4 Hotmail ids :-) ). Right now, I have only 1% of my space filled. This is a welcome feature during this critical application period. No need to worry about cleaning up the space every week.

I guess Microsoft is rolling out the 250MB allocation in phased manner..I was lucky to get it now..Hope everyone else gets it soon..

Hotmail to offer 250MB of free storage
“The upgrade will increase Hotmail’s free e-mail storage limits from 2 megabytes to 250MB and its paid e-mail service, which costs $19.95 a year, from 10MB to 2 gigabytes. The changes will begin in early July.”

Got a Free domain name

Some days back , Vasanth suggested this website, Domainsite, which offered free domain name registration on “.info” for a period of 1 year. I quickly grabbed a domain name for myself. www.bharani.info

Today, When I checked the same site, the free offer has been taken away. But still the price they charge is far far less…Just 0.99$/year. Anyone interested can give a try..

I have provided URL redirection instructions to redirect www.bharani.info to MBADream.
