The following link lists the day-to-day life in Cranfield reported by students. Worth looking, if you would like get a flavour of MBA and definitely worth looking, if you are considering Cranfield for the upcoming academic year.

With topsy-turvy google rankings and participation of heavy weights like Aravind, Sumit, Nilesh, it was destined for my website to lose the winning position in the Indian Best Business School Blog Competiton. Yes, after sustaining the 2nd position for so near yet so far, I lost the position today.
Finally the Pagerank had it’s final say, pushing the ‘freshness’ factor to a secondary category. With less than 24 hours remaining, Arvind and Sumit are all set to win the contest. Congratulations!
Well, I had loads of fun with this competition. Most of the competitors had their blog running for quite long time, so naturally their websites were well linked and page-ranked by google. In that aspect, I am happy that I kept most of them at bay with a relatively new blog which is just 20 days old. I concentrated on essentials like Heading, Title, Key-word density in the page. As against the approach of all other participants, I had outgoing links for all the participants. I call it a true sportsman spirit!!! and not a bad fight at all!
All in all, It was a fun. Now it’s time to remove the phrase “The Best Indian Business school blog”, which has sprung all over my website

Microsoft is building a huge campus adjacent to Indian School of Business campus. It is planning to hire 100’s in the upcoming 12 months. Microsoft is in my target list, for POST-MBA employement. So this news is a confirmation of my intuition/dream/sense. The close proximity of ISB and Microsoft will help each other.
In last couple of months quite a few big-shots have visited India. IBM Chairman Samuel J.Palmisano, Intel chairman - Craig Barnett and now Steve Balmer,Microsoft. Looks like challenging and creative jobs are coming to India in huge numbers. Management graduates will have ample oppurtunities to harness their studies and potential through these companies. If the current trend continues, then my decision to pursue MBA in India will be justified. Time will answer.
Microsoft to recruit more staff in India
PS: I read this article from Hindu today. In this article, V.K.Menon, Director of Admissions, Indian School of business, talks about the growing number of B-schoolers and how ISB is positioned to serve them and how ISB is established in “experienced peer group” community.
The following article lists 10 technologies that will change the way we learn…
http://www.masternewmedia.org/news/2004/11/21/ten_technologies_that_are_going.htm
1. Search technologies
2. Data visualization tools
3. Blogs - Direct publishing and content aggregation tools
4. Audio and video - increased use of audio and video as communication channels for small publishers
5. RSS - content syndication, aggregation, re-use
6. P2P - private and public file sharing networks
7. Unlimited storage - on the desktop and online
8. Unlimited bandwidth - Wifi - WiMax
9. Real Time Collaboration Tools
10. Collective and Collaborative Filtering - human spontaneous cooperative technology like del.icio.us and FURL.net [A social bookmarking tool]
I searched for the phrase “The Best Indian Business school blog” in 4 different search engines. I am happy to see that all 4 search engines place my website in top 6.
The results:
1. MSN.com
The Best Indian Business School Blog [4]
2. Yahoo.com
The Best Indian Business School Blog [2]
3. AltaVista.com
The Best Indian Business School Blog [2]
4. Google.com
The Best Indian Business School Blog [6]
But what matters in the end is “Google“.
Atleast I am back in Contention. Today, the www.ebloggy.com site administrators tooks some special care based on my multiple requests, to fix the URL. As expected my website, “The Best Indian Business School blog”, went down the ranking. Credits to the site downtime.
Now, I feel like the Indian team achieving a vital breakthrough in the opposition team. I am hoping that my strike bowlers [strategies] will earn an unlikely victory to me
. Fingers crossed! 2 days to go!!!!
But the competition has generated quite an amount of interest, as evident from the number of sites turning up in google for the phrase “Best Indian Business school blog”. It is turning out to be a classic thriller like India-pakistan match.
The www.ebloggy.com website unfortunately crashed due to database problems, and due that my website is not accessible temporarily through the url http://mbadream.ebloggy.com
But the site administrators are working on the issue. Currently, the blog is accessible through http://ebloggy.com/mbadream. In the mean time, when I checked the google rankings for “Best Indian Business School blog”, I was pleasantly surprised to see that heavyweights nilesh, sumit, prateek are pushed down…But I am hoping that my site downtime doesn’t push me down in the upcoming days! I have certain plans(good cause) for the cash If ever I manage to get…4 days to go..Somedays back I said I was not overly eager..Now I think I am eager to know the result of the competition…
When I looked at the statistics page of my blog, I found that my page turned first for the query
“How do you define leadership? Take the example of a leader you admire (living or deceased%”
and somebody had come to my website hopefully in search of an answer for that question!!
“Since a lot of you are starting to gear up for the upcoming round of B-School applications, I thought I might float some tenets to follow:
GMAT is the gatekeeper - crush it, than move on
GMAT is definitely not the end all, be all - a good score guarantees nothing! So many applicants just don’t seem to understand this
Your story is what will seal the deal - this should be written into all aspects of your app. Essays are the most important, but it should also come out in your interviews, recommendations, transcript, etc.
Make sure to address all weaknesses - Sounds obvious, but most applicants do a poor job of doing this. Below avg. GMAT?, better prove you can handle the rigor, Low WE? Show the depth and breadth of experience you’ve had in that time in and out of professional environments. Go to a no-name undergrad? Give rationale reasoning as to why and prove that you received a top-notch education there.
Interview with passion - Prove to the adcomm that their school is #1 and that you’re going to impact the world based on your education there
Apply early - Be a shark and go round 1 across the board, submit round 2 if your apps aren’t quite ready. Regardless, never submit at the deadline - go at least 1 week earlier
Coach recommenders - Give them sample recommendations, your gameplan so they can tie into your story and make sure they tailor the reco to the school
Apply to schools based on fit and never apply to a school you wouldn’t attend - There actually a fair number of people who will apply to a safety and decide not to go. Why’d you apply there in the first place? Figure out what schools fit with your needs and apply to those - don’t get caught up in the race for prestige
Visit the campuses of your top schools - Nothing beats being able to write that you sat in class, talked to students/profs. It shows committment, plus you’ll get a good feel for the school. Yes, there are differences.
Community service & extra-curricullars are a must - Some top schools are known to ding on this basis alone”
Some days back , Vasanth suggested this website, Domainsite, which offered free domain name registration on “.info” for a period of 1 year. I quickly grabbed a domain name for myself. www.bharani.info
Today, When I checked the same site, the free offer has been taken away. But still the price they charge is far far less…Just 0.99$/year. Anyone interested can give a try..
I have provided URL redirection instructions to redirect www.bharani.info to MBADream.
With reference to my blog entry on Application Essays, I would also like to suggest reading the following article.
PLAGIARISM PROBLEM: ARE STUDENTS ENTIRELY TO BLAME?
“Aside from the ‘all-or-nothing cheater’, the type most likely to buy a whole paper online, Renard (1999,
p. 38) also identifies the ‘sneaky cheater’, the student who knows what plagiarism is, but works hard to
avoid detection. These students cut-and-paste from a variety of sources on the web and possibly from
other students’ papers with a view to manufacturing an answer. They might also attempt to cover their
tracks through the provision of incomplete or inaccurate bibliographic details in their list of references.
Then there is the ‘unintentional cheater’, the type who simply does not know any better. These students
typically insert slabs of unattributed text in their essays and, when challenged, claim ignorance of the
system.
What each of these three types of plagiarist has in common is a lack of empathy for the academic
enterprise. Call it ‘cyber-sloth’ (Carnie, 2001), Internet-inspired indolence, or plain, old-fashioned
laziness, if a ready-made answer to a question cannot be found online then, for some, it simply cannot be
worth having. The development of an educated opinion, a lively inquiring mind, a creative impulse –
these things are missing. As this author once read in a student’s email signature: ‘Clay’s Conclusion:
Creativity is great, but plagiarism is faster’.”
After a long thought, I have decided to drop INSEAD from my list due to various reasons. If I change my mind, then I do have a final lifeline in the form of 3rd round.
This leaves me with two colleges to focus on, CRANFIELD & OXFORD. Essays could be resued between these two colleges. That is a good news for me. I will start off with the brainstorming of essays on Saturday. Till then, I am going to live my regular life, which I miss very much…
I would also have to find time to prepare for the ISB interview (ofcourse If I am short-listed)
I submitted the ISB online Application moments ago. Waiting for the confirmation mail from ISB authorities about receipt of application.
4 days back, I saw the instructions of EMBARK online application form..and it mentioned
“The ISB has several need and merit based scholarships. The scholarship decision is based on several factors of outstanding performance in academics or other fields and financial details of an applicant. Please fill in the form below and answer the essay based on which a decision will be taken by the scholarship committee.”
So, I thought I will fill up the scholarship essay and spent nearly 6-7 hours (Spent over 4 days) and came up with a really good-looking essay..
Today I was browsing through the yahoo groups and isb website and saw the post where people were discussing that the ISB scholarship is primarily need-based [The fact that the ISB tuition waiver, which is awarded to 100 students, is primarily need-based will substantiate that claim]. All other scholarships are from Anandgroup, HSBC, Citibank which will be (by all probability) applicable for finance guys or women.
Anyway, I will send the scholarship-essay knowing that it is going to collect dust
(…Mood disappointed…
I was pleasantly surprised to see my blog as third in the google search results. Since I started my blog only 15 days ago, I thought my chances of getting through would be tough.
Here, I am…sitting 3rd in the google’s search result, on the phrase “The Best Indian business school blog“. 8 more days to go..anything can happen!! I am not overly eager about this, but still I find this interesting.
Sunday:
Last sunday turned out to be a sleepful day as I was bit feverish. I didn’t go to the film either…Nevertheless, I made sure that I recover on Monday…
Monday:
Sent the Transcripts, GMAT score card, Passport-size photographs, +2 marksheet through post. I opted for registration-cum-priority post to ensure absolute safety. I don’t want to be fooled at the last moment. I ended up paying 6.5 Euros. This amount felt bigger only when I compared it with the application fees of 2000 Rupees. The lady said it will take “anywhere between 4-10 days” for delivery. Eventhough I have allowance for 12 days for the nov 30 deadline, I have my fingers crossed!!
My instructions for SWIFT transfer was successfully executed. My money credited to Indian account with an exchange rate of 57.63 Rupees..When I came here in Feb 2002, the exchange rate was 40.33 Rupees..An increase of 42%!! Not bad huh!
Tuesday:
Completed the application. Finished up with Resume. Applied all the changes to the essays. Created a whole new Scholarship essay (looks good!, my essay writing talent is improving well!). My second recommender sent his evaluation form.
After 2 hour intensive effort, I created a decent looking scholarship essay. Tomorrow, I will review the whole application and the scholarship essay for one final time. If everything goes well, I will reward myself by going for the film “The Terminal” and finish my long weekend in a good note!
Yesterday I received the feedback from my reviewers. They really took a lot of effort in reviewing the essays for content and language. Some of his comments pointed to some obvious mistakes. Even if I had gone through the essays for 50 times, I wouldn’t have found it. I followed it up with a telephone call to him and got more inputs. Now, I am incorporating the changes to my essays. Tonight I will finalize the essays. My resume is also looking decent enough after compressing it to one-page (with a 10.5 pt Times New roman font though!)
But I am stuck with the scholarship essays. Still thinking how to proceed. Hopefully i will find a solution soon. On Monday, I will send the Transcripts and photographs through postal mail.
Hmm…finding it difficult to concentrate since there are distractions around me. Yesterday my friend bought the “Halo 2″ for his X-Box. I am not playing the game fearing that I will lose valuable time, but I am not able to control my urge…I think I will end up playing that tonight!! “Halo” is my all time best game! Amazing story, stunning graphics, physics, AI..a perfect game..I downloaded the “Halo” PC version last month…I will install it after the application process
Today I was watching the re-telecast of “Domino Day 2004″. In this event, they created a new world record for Domino Toppling by toppling a whopping 3.992.397 dominos!
The world record is the result of months of effort of 100’s of poeple. This event is a perfect example of team effort. One single person’s fault can easily jeopardize the entire flow. The theme for this year was “The Challenge”.
Some of the ideas were extraordinary and the implementations were spectacular to watch.
Some concepts that took centre stage in this year’s event.

The website “wordcount“, is an artistic experiment in the way we use language. It presents the 86,800 most frequently used English words, ranked in order of commonality..

The book published in 1971 is worth looking at. It gives a feel of how Computers were imagined by common people.
http://davidguy.brinkster.net/computer/
The topic “This Year, Next Year, Sometime…?“, particulary is worth looking at…
15 years ago, when Internet was not available to masses, People sought the help of library for Essay writing skills, Vocabulary improvement and elegant Sentence formations. But today, there is a magic wand called “Internet”. You get so many tips and tutorials on “how to write good Application Essays?”, each providing atleast one solid suggestion. The process of looking up for alternate words, for conveying a message, is amazingly simple. Years before, one had to go through the dictionary, page by page, to fit and match different words. Now you have all those reverse dictionaries, synonym finders etc. either in a software or in a website.
Another advantage that the current day people have is the forums, where like-minded people share information with each other on all aspects of business schools, including applications. Yet another advantage is the email which puts you in touch with your friends(reviewers) all over the world. Review process becomes much simpler with Advanced word processors like Microsoft word.
Naturally, with so much assitance from technology, Application essays are becoming increasingly professional, well-formed and looking great! Standards have increased. But there are some people out there, who literally do ‘copy-paste’ plagiarism either from old essays or websites. with today’s search engines like “google”, such plagiarisms can be easily identified in an essay, . Many applicants fail to see through the underlying threat and persist with plagiarism. Moreover, its always best to present yourself as you are, in a honest fashion. Otherwise, true colours will come out one day, spoiling all your hard work till that date.
Keep in mind that I am talking only about presentation of essays. The content for the essays would in all probability be a unique one, as experiences and circumstances of each individual are vastly different.
With so much free assistance thrown at you now-a-days, it will be foolish to neglect them. Admission committee knows these forms of assistance, so naturally the expectation rises. So, wish you all the best with your essays and I kindly request you to utilize all the facilities that you have in your hand today…
PS: There is a misconception regarding adcoms comparing AWA with your essays. No way this comparison would yield a result. Simply because the AWA is written in 30 minute time frame, with little time for presentation of essays and review of essays. Application essays on the other hand, is an output of days or weeks or months of effort! The Comparison doesn’t come close at all…
Gmail has introduced “Pop Access” and “Email Forwarding” features. Here’s what it has to say…
“It’s your mail. You should be able to choose how and where you read it. Access your mail the way you want to, with free POP access and automatic forwarding. You can even switch to other email services without having to worry about losing access to your messages. Think of it as email portability.”
Cool!
The ISB Best Blog Competition has stirred huge amount of interest amoung netizens.
Fine, But I have a doubt. When I search in google with “The Best Indian business school blog” in quotes, only 4 sites turn up with a blog from “Mandevian” turning up at #1. When I search in google the same phrase without quotes, Sumit Dhar’s page turn out somewhere at 12/13. In one way Mandevian is the winner, in other way Sumit dhar is the winner..So who is the real winner?? ISB’s search light clause should make this clear!!! Or it will be an issue later…
If I have to make a prudent choice, the Quoted search should not be considered..But…………..
ATTENTION search-light team!!
If you want fun, then follow the simple steps. For each day google on the phrase “The best Indian business school blog“, and see how different sites turn up daily. The reason for the variation is the different tactics followed by each one. Only way to beat the system is to hold your important tactical weapon till the last moment…like a wounded sea-snake!!!
For ex., One person has given a big heading on his blog of this size!!..
The Best Indian business School blog.
It’s a long weekend in Belgium [November 11 - November 14]. These 4 days will help me to a great extent in catching up with the pending works and in pushing towards the dealine.
I asked the Admission Committee of ISB if I can ask my Recommenders to directly email the Recommendation Letters to them. I got a reply saying the approach is perfectly ok.
“Dear,
You may use the attached format and request your evaluator to forward the recos directly to admissions@isb.edu
”
This approach is faster and easier. INSEAD, OXFORD also have online Recommendation forms. So I have to send the conventional postal mail only for CRANFIELD.
BTW, INSEAD and MANCHESTER have chosen the approach of “NetApply”. You have to see the PDF application of INSEAD to believe it yourself. It’s clean, tidy and snappy. There is a button “Request Recommendation links” or something. Upon pressing that, it will generate two links, which you should send to your recommenders. It’s professional.
The Architecture of “NetApply“.
The “NetApply” team has also come out with the following idea “NetApply USB”. This is a memory key(USB Flash drive), which can be used by Academic institutions to send out it’s application materials, Campus videos, Dean messages, Student talks etc., Cool!
2 months back, when I was not sure if the Recommenders will complete the letter before deadline,I devised a strategy to get Reco letters from 4 people (yes!). 3 were Client project managers and one was my Director. 2 of them completed the Recommendation letters a week ago (except for some additional questions). Today I got a surprise from my Director who has completed the Recommendation letter. He said he has given very good recommendation saying that he wanted to do some favour for me for what I have done to the organization. That’s cool! Now, I am thinking about sending all 3 letters to ISB.
Looking back, I really can’t believe that I am in the finishing stages of application. It was a solid effort which started way back in March-April. I have been living the life of Analysis, Research, Preparation, Strategies etc., 45 days from now, I would have completed all my 4 apps and would be waiting eagerly for Interviews (Oh yeah! “The last mile”). I am looking forward for that relaxing period. But the sad thing is by that time, all my colleagues in Belgium would have left Belgium, so I would have to spend my time lonely here
…Since I am busy with Apps now, I am not feeling the loneliness much. Tough times ahead..I will treat these things (I am bit sentimental!) as a kind of sacrifices one makes for achieving their goal!
Last week, While I was browing net, I came across this good checklist, which is worthwhile giving away to your reviewers to keep in mind
Ask editors to read with these questions in mind:
1. WHAT is the essay about?
2. Have I used active voice verbs wherever possible?
3. Is my sentence structure varied or do I use all long or all short sentences?
4. Do you detect any cliches?
5. Do I use transition appropriately?
6. Do I use imagery often and does this make the essay clearer and more vivid?
7. What’s the best part of the essay?
8. What about the essay is memorable?
9. What’s the worst part of the essay?
10. What parts of the essay need elaboration or are unclear?
11. What parts of the essay do not support your main argument or are immaterial to your case?
12. Is every single sentence crucial to the essay? This MUST be the case.
13. What does the essay reveal about your personality?
14. Could anyone else have written this essay?
15. How would you fill in the following blank based on the essay: “I want to accept you to this college because our college needs more ________.”
I am not the one to write essays in hours. I reallyyyy take time. So, after 10 days of intensive essay writing and having sent the essays for review, I thought I will not do anything for 1 day(Sunday). This would help me for next 15 days in INSEAD, CRANFIELD apps. Yesterday, I visited some of my new Accenture friends who have come to Belgium for onsite study. I joined them for a film “Alien Vs Predator”. The film was ok. Worth watching one time. I had a nice relaxing day yesterday.
My fitness pass has expired. I have to renew it. I donno if i will go regularly until i finish my apps, so currently contemplating the dates for joining fitness.
Today, I will start off with INSEAD. This week, I have to round-up my application of ISB and recommendation letters. If everything goes well, I will send in my ISB app by November 15th 2004.
There is an interesting B-School event happening in ISB. It’s called “Poseidon”. www.isb-poseidon.com
There is an interesting competition. It goes something like this “Google your way to fame, glory and prize money! Get your blog / website to be the first on Google for the search phrase...
The participants should include the following image in their website as a proof of participating.

All the best!
After feeling satisfied, I re-sent the ISB essays to 3 best persons I know for reviewing. One of them is currently doing his MBA in a premiere college in UK. He has already provided some valuable feedbacks. Being a student who went through all this before, I respect his suggestions. Waiting for more feedback. In the mean time, I am going to read some tutorials on condensing contents.
I created a Recommendation letter template with all the questions from all the colleges that I am applying for. Unfortunately, I overlooked some questions. Well, what does this mean? It means that I had to go back to my ever-busy project managers and clients and ask them to provide the answers to missing questions. They had already expressed that they are finding it difficult to answer the questions, more difficult than university examinations
. I had no other option but to pursuade them.
After series of reminders, one of my recommenders completed the template. Another recommender was in the verge of exploding, so I had some cooling off sessions explaining the importance of their act in my life!
Now the recommender is progressing well. Hopefull Recommendations will be ready next week.
Not satisfied with some essays and sentence structuring, I recreated some content afresh. Now, all 6 essays look decent. Word counts are within limit, except for one essay. The critical assessment essay currently has 680 words. Need to condense it.
But I find the word limit amusing because the company name can easily take up 3-4 words. Would they be treated as one? And there are some light-weight words like “I”, “is,was,to,for” etc., which are necessary evil but still take up space. I think average word length of 8 characters per word is acceptable. Going by that standards, I think 600*8 = 4800 characters should be the limit. Or, your essay should fit in one page with 11 point font. Anyways, one needs to play the games by the rule..So I am planning to avoid the light-weight words as much as possible and create a hyper-condensed essay. Let me see how better is my precise writing skills!!
I have completed first-draft of the first 5 essays of ISB. The Post-MBA professional objective question remains. My First impression is that, the essays have come out well. I have send the essays for review to 3 of my best reviewers. 2 essays in Cranfield are almost complete.
I have made a change in my approach. INSEAD is taking first priority and Cranfield has been pushed back (because Cranfield is rolling and their response is instantaneous, so i can do it after gruelling application of INSEAD). Today, I am starting off with INSEAD essays. I am happy with the fact that some of the contents can be reused for all colleges, so I don’t have to start afresh.

After lot of postponement, I decided to start off my blogs with this free blog hosting. “ebloggy” is really cool! No ad images on blog page. Clean! Somewhere down the line i would register my own website so that i don’t have limitations on bandwidth usage.
Well, Let me introduce myself. I am an Indian IT consultant, 26, currently specializing in J2EE based solutions.
After 5 years of IT programming, project execution and consulting life, I have decided to move to the top management of the Organization. The best passport is MBA. After some deep thoughts, I decided to take up the effort in applying to colleges. I wrote my GMAT examination in September and scored 700+. Recommendation letters are ready from my two best project managers. Currently writing Application essays. More later
